I took her in without asking for anything in return. We eventually lost touch as our lives changed. Zoe became a successful lawyer, while I dropped out just before earning my degree, got married, and later found myself trapped in a terrible marriage with three children and nowhere to turn.<\/p>\n<p>When I finally went to Zoe for help, she told me she didn\u2019t have time because of her heavy caseload. I was hurt and thought she had forgotten everything I had done for her. But the next day, a family court judge called me with astonishing news: an anonymous lawyer had filed for my divorce pro bono, secured emergency custody of my children, and arranged a protective order against my husband.<\/p>\n<p>I immediately knew it was Zoe. When I called her, she explained that she hadn\u2019t refused to help me\u2014she had refused to become my lawyer because she was too emotionally close to my situation. Instead, she spent the entire night calling in favors she had built throughout her career, making sure I had an excellent legal team and a judge who could protect me. She told me she had never forgotten what I did for her when we were students.<\/p>\n<p>Within six months, I was divorced, had full custody of my children, and was finally free. Zoe never asked for recognition, and she even helped me return to school so I could finish my degree. I had once thought she had turned her back on me, only to discover that she had been helping me in a way I could never have imagined.
