I spent two weeks alone in the hospital while my children were overseas and my friends were busy. Every night, a gentle male nurse visited my room, sat beside my bed, and reminded me not to lose hope. His comforting words helped me sleep peacefully, even when medication made it difficult to speak. When I was discharged, I asked the staff how I could thank him, but they insisted no male nurse had been assigned to my room and suggested I might have experienced hallucinations. Five weeks later, during a follow-up appointment, a receptionist handed me an envelope containing a note from a volunteer who explained that he had survived a similar accident and had once been comforted by a nurse. He had promised to offer the same kindness to others whenever he could. His final words were, “You don’t need to come back to thank me. Just live well. That’s enough.” At that moment, I realized that sometimes the most powerful kindness comes from someone who understands our pain and chooses to show up simply because someone once did the same for them.
