When my grandmother saw me working as a waitress at a diner, she was shocked and asked why I still needed a second job when my grandfather had supposedly paid off my student loans years ago. I told her I was still paying $412 every month. Without hesitation, she called her attorney and said, “It’s about Elwood’s money.” After checking my grandfather’s old financial records, we discovered that my father had secretly used the $38,640 meant to pay off my student loans to clear my younger brother’s college debt instead. He had even taken another $10,000 by pretending it was for my veterinary school applications, which I had never submitted. My father had convinced my grandfather that he was helping me, knowing his eyesight was failing. My grandmother was heartbroken and furious. With the help of her attorney and my brother, we uncovered the truth and confronted my father. He finally admitted that he had chosen to help my brother because he believed I could always manage on my own. Grandma demanded that he acknowledge the money and arranged to have the stolen amount accounted for in his inheritance. Then she made her own decision: she paid off my remaining student loans herself. A few days later, I checked my account at work and saw a zero balance. I cried with relief, knowing my grandfather’s original wish had finally come true. On my last day at the diner, Grandma arrived with her friends, ordered peach pie, and asked me to sit with them. Later, she opened Grandpa’s old green ledger, wrote, “Halley’s college loans paid in full,” and underlined it twice. Then she handed me the book and whispered, “He would have wanted you to have this.” ❤️
