I was twenty years old when I realized the story I\u2019d been told about my father\u2019s death wasn\u2019t the whole truth.For fourteen years, Meredith had repeated the same explanation whenever I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a car accident,\u201d she would say. \u201cNothing anyone could have prevented.\u201dAnd I believed her.<\/p>\n

For the first four years of my life, it had been just Dad and me. My memories are hazy\u2014warm flashes of him lifting me onto the kitchen counter, his cheek rough against mine when he carried me to bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSupervisors belong up high,\u201d he\u2019d say with a grin. \u201cYou\u2019re my whole world, kiddo.\u201d<\/p>\n

My biological mother died the day I was born. Once, while he flipped pancakes, I asked, \u201cDid Mommy like pancakes?\u201d<\/p>\n

He paused for just a second.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe loved them,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cBut not as much as she would have loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice always changed when he spoke about her, thick and careful. I didn\u2019t understand that tone until years later.<\/p>\n
