I spent the rest of the night trying to convince myself there was a simple explanation. Maybe I was exhausted, maybe a sound from the TV had blended with my thoughts, or maybe my mind had filled in a familiar voice because I missed having my daughter nearby. Still, the way I heard those words so clearly stayed with me.
The next morning, I told myself not to overthink it. I checked her room again, expecting to find nothing unusual. Everything was exactly how it had been left before she went to my parents’ house. Nothing was moved, nothing was different, but the memory of that moment still felt strangely real.
A few days later, I mentioned it to my daughter as a joke. She laughed and said, “Maybe I was just making sure you remembered to close my door.” Her reaction was innocent, and it helped me relax, even though I never fully forgot that night.
Sometimes we experience things we can’t immediately explain. Maybe it was just a tired mind creating a familiar sound in the middle of the night. Or maybe it was something else. Either way, it reminded me how powerful the bond between a parent and child can be—even when they aren’t in the same room.
