The music stopped the moment the first SUV rolled into the driveway. Several investigators in dark suits stepped out, calmly surveying the backyard before one flashed a badge. Guests exchanged nervous glances as whispers spread through the crowd. Daniel tried to ask what was happening, but no one answered him. The lead investigator walked straight to the table where the property documents had been waiting.
Sophie’s confident smile disappeared. “There has to be some mistake,” she insisted, but the investigator barely looked at her. He opened the folder, examined the paperwork for a few seconds, then nodded to the others. “No mistake,” I said quietly. “Everything we needed is right there.” My words hit harder than any scream ever could.
The investigator faced the guests. “These documents contain forged signatures, unauthorized financial activity, and evidence of attempted property fraud.” Gasps swept across the lawn as phones appeared in every direction. Daniel’s father tried to interrupt, but another agent was already speaking into his radio. “Confirmation received,” he said. “Move forward.”
The candles still flickered, and the flowers remained untouched, but the celebration had already fallen apart. I looked directly at Daniel and took one final step forward. “You didn’t just try to marry someone else in my backyard,” I said. “You tried to steal my home while my name was still on every legal document.” Seconds later, metal handcuffs clicked shut, ending the wedding before the vows were ever spoken.
