My Mother-in-Law Refused to Babysit—Then Rejected Our Offer to Pay Her..

After my mother-in-law retired, I hoped she could occasionally help care for our three young children. Instead, she firmly told me she wasn’t a free babysitter, explaining that she had already raised her own kids and wanted to enjoy her retirement. Although I respected her honesty, I was disappointed because we genuinely needed extra support.

My husband and I decided to approach the situation differently by offering her a paid arrangement. We created a simple “offer letter” with flexible babysitting hours, a weekly payment, and thoughtful perks like coffee on us, hoping it would show we valued her time rather than expected free childcare.

To our surprise, the gesture had the opposite effect. She looked at the letter for a long moment before saying, “So now I’m an employee? You think I need charity?” Feeling insulted, she walked out, leaving us confused about whether offering payment had made the situation worse instead of better.

The best way forward is to have an open, respectful conversation about her boundaries and what, if any, role she wants to play. Rather than assuming she should babysit or that payment would solve the issue, asking what she’s comfortable with and showing appreciation in ways that matter to her can help preserve the relationship while finding a solution that works for everyone.
