When I presented my family tree at school, it only included my mom and me. My teacher looked at it and remarked, “Single parent? Interesting choice.” The class laughed, and I was so embarrassed that I left for the bathroom and never returned to class that day.
The next morning, my mom came to school before class started and quietly placed a folder on the teacher’s desk. When he opened it, the room fell silent. Inside were her college diploma, two job offer letters from the year I was born, and a photo of her holding me just hours after finishing a long overnight shift before my birth.
On top of everything was a handwritten sticky note that read, “For your records. In case ‘interesting choice’ needs a citation.” The teacher read it without saying a word and remained standing for the rest of the class.
He never made another comment about anyone’s family again. I kept that folder, and years later, after earning my own diploma, I added it beside hers—a reminder of the strength, sacrifice, and dignity my mother showed that day.
