My husband and I have been together for over 10 years and have built a happy family with three children. Our first pregnancy, however, was completely unexpected. I became pregnant at 19 while taking birth control, working two jobs, and trying to support us financially, while he was unemployed and had no clear career plans.
During a dinner with friends, my husband suddenly joked that I had “baby trapped” him. I was stunned and immediately asked what he meant. When he implied it was suspicious that I became pregnant after several years together, I reminded him that birth control is not foolproof and asked what possible advantage I could have gained by trapping someone who was unemployed at the time.
The conversation quickly became tense in front of our guests. I pointed out that I had been working hard to build a future for us while he had no job, and I refused to accept the accusation. Although my response embarrassed him, I felt he had crossed a much bigger line by publicly questioning my honesty and intentions.
Since that night, we have barely spoken except about household responsibilities. I don’t believe I owe the first apology because I was responding to a hurtful accusation, but I also don’t want the silence to continue forever. Now I’m trying to figure out how to move forward without pretending that his comment didn’t deeply hurt me.
