After moving to a new city, I was injured in a scooter accident and found myself lying on the side of the road with no friends or family to call. Unable to afford an ambulance, I ordered an Uber instead. The driver carefully helped me into his car, drove me straight to the emergency room, and listened quietly as I admitted I didn’t know anyone in my new city.
While I was taken away for X-rays, the driver disappeared without saying a word. When I returned, I panicked after realizing my backpack was missing. It contained my laptop, passport, and every important document I owned, and I feared it had been stolen.
Before I could report it, a nurse smiled and explained that the driver had taken my bag only so he could use my ID to collect my prescriptions from the hospital pharmacy. He had even paid for the medication himself, wanting to make sure I had everything I needed before leaving the hospital.
Because visitors weren’t allowed beyond that point, he waited patiently outside until I returned. Handing me my backpack and prescriptions, he simply said, “You looked like you had enough to worry about already.” In a city where I felt completely alone, a stranger’s unexpected kindness reminded me that compassion can appear when it’s needed most.
