My hands trembled as I opened Robert’s letter. A month later, I found one last surprise tucked inside the false bottom of the box—a simple photograph of Robert holding our newborn son outside the farmhouse, with a note written across the back: “If you’re reading this, then we made it. You had forty-one beautiful years because I kept one promise—to bring every danger to me before it ever reached you. Thank you for giving me a life worth protecting.” I pressed the picture to my heart, looked across the peaceful fields we had built together, and realized the greatest secret my husband ever kept was not that he had once lived another life—it was how completely he had devoted both of them to protecting ours.
