How I Outsmarted a Friend Who Refused to Return My Necklace.

I lent my expensive necklace to a friend for a company event after she promised she only needed it for one evening. Instead of returning it, she spent the next month making excuse after excuse, always saying she would bring it back “tomorrow,” making it clear she had no intention of giving it back anytime soon.

Rather than confronting her or starting an argument, I came up with a different approach. I contacted her husband and told him that his wife loved my necklace so much that I wanted to have a jeweler make a similar one, but I needed a detailed photo of it.

He quickly sent me a clear picture of my necklace, but also mentioned that he thought it was strange because his wife had told him she had already returned it. I thanked him without explaining anything further, letting him realize the truth on his own.

The very next day, my friend returned the necklace herself, clearly embarrassed. Ironically, a month later she thanked me because the necklace had inspired her husband to buy her a similar gift for their anniversary. Although I got my jewelry back, the experience permanently damaged my trust, and I no longer wanted to continue the friendship.
