The Neighbor I Misjudged..

An elderly woman in my neighborhood would constantly scream whenever my children played outside, and I assumed she was just a bitter, lonely neighbor. Frustrated, I called her names, built a fence to block her from our yard, and ignored every warning she shouted.

After she passed away alone, I entered her home and noticed black tape covering her window. When I peeled it back and looked outside, I discovered a worn trail leading from the woods to my children’s swing set, coyote tracks surrounding the sandbox, and a den hidden beneath an old oak tree.

On her bedside table was a notebook filled with months of careful observations, sketches, and records showing she had repeatedly reported the coyote to animal control. I learned she had covered her window only after becoming too weak to stand there, unable to bear watching the animal return when she could no longer scare it away.

I realized she had never been yelling at my children—she had been protecting them. Overcome with guilt, I tore down the fence that had separated us and planted lilacs in her memory, honoring the woman I had mistaken for an enemy when she had quietly been our guardian all along.
