Which Side of the Fence Should Face Your Neighbor? Here’s What I Learned Before Building Mine

When I decided to install a fence in my backyard, I kept hearing the same advice: “Make sure the finished side faces your neighbor.” The finished side is the smooth, polished side without visible rails, while the unfinished side shows the supporting framework. Many people believe this is a legal requirement, but that isn’t always the case.

After researching local building codes, I learned there is no universal law requiring the finished side to face your neighbor. In most areas, it’s simply a long-standing tradition based on courtesy and neighborhood appearance. However, some cities, counties, or homeowners’ associations (HOAs) do have rules about fence orientation, so checking local regulations is always important.

Fence ownership also affects the decision. If the fence is entirely on your property, you usually have more freedom to choose its direction. For shared boundary fences, discussing the design with your neighbor can help avoid future disagreements. Some homeowners also install “good neighbor” fences that look the same on both sides or reverse the rails for security or practical reasons.

In the end, facing the finished side toward your neighbor is often considered good etiquette rather than a universal rule. The best approach is to review local regulations, confirm your property lines, and communicate with your neighbor before installation. Doing so helps ensure your fence meets requirements while maintaining a positive relationship with those living next door.
