The Shoes He Never Told Me About..

My husband died six weeks ago. While cleaning out his workshop, I found a box filled with children’s shoes—sizes 2 through 7. We never had children, so I couldn’t understand why he had so many pairs. Each pair had a child’s name and a date written beside it. Confused and desperate for answers, I took the shoes to the store listed on an old receipt.

The owner looked at me and asked, “You’re his wife?” Then she quietly pulled out a binder and showed me a list. For nine years, whenever a new foster child came through our local shelter, my husband would come into her store and buy a pair of shoes in the child’s size. He made sure every child had something that was truly theirs.

The store owner had kept records because, after three years, she began giving him a discount. The list contained 41 names—41 children and 41 pairs of shoes. What broke my heart was learning that my husband never told me about any of it. He never asked for praise, never told the shelter his name, and never let anyone know who was paying for those shoes.

Then the owner explained the small sticky notes I had noticed inside every pair. They weren’t receipts or reminders. They were there so each child could write their own name inside their new shoes. I stood there holding the box, realizing that the man I thought I knew had been quietly changing the lives of children for nine years. In death, he had shown me a side of himself he had never needed me to see.
