When my 15-year-old son took a DNA test for fun, the results shocked me: he shared 50% of his DNA with his best friend. Thinking it was a mistake, I went to see the boy’s mother. She turned pale and asked, “Who else saw this?” She then revealed that my husband had been with her a year before our marriage and that she had given birth to his son—someone he refused to acknowledge.
She never took my husband to court or caused a scene. Instead, she moved to our neighborhood and enrolled her son in the same school as mine, quietly allowing the boys to grow up together. She wanted her child to know his brother, even though neither boy knew the truth.
When I confronted her, she broke down and begged me not to tell my husband, terrified he would try to take her son away. I expected to leave angry, but instead I made her a promise. We kept the secret, and I began inviting her son into our home more often, making sure he knew he was family.
Years later, the boys are still inseparable. Her son was accepted into university this fall, and mine plans to apply there next year because he says he cannot imagine going anywhere without his best friend. She and I still meet for coffee every Saturday. Some might call what she did deceptive, but I call it the most selfless thing a mother could have done.
