My Parents Canceled My Insulin for My Sister’s Concert—Then I Woke Up in the ICU..

I was seventeen and had lived with Type 1 diabetes since I was nine, so my parents knew insulin was essential. One Thursday, I discovered they had canceled my refill and used the money for my sister Chloe’s VIP concert tickets. When I confronted them, Mom told me to “ration” what I had left, while Dad insisted the concert was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Chloe even said it wasn’t like I was dying that day.

I tried to stretch my insulin for two days, but by Sunday I was vomiting, confused, and eventually collapsed. I woke up in the ICU after being treated for severe diabetic ketoacidosis. When the doctor asked why I hadn’t had enough insulin, I finally told the truth. A hospital social worker investigated and discovered this wasn’t an isolated incident—my parents had repeatedly delayed or restricted my medical supplies while prioritizing Chloe’s activities and expenses.

My aunt Rebecca arrived and refused to let me return home. Police records confirmed that my parents had knowingly canceled the refill, and my father admitted they believed I could survive a few more days without it. The concert tickets were eventually frozen and refunded during the investigation. Child welfare became involved, and I moved in with my aunt while finishing high school.

A year later, I started college and began speaking with a youth health advocacy group about medical neglect. I never sought revenge against my parents. Instead, I told the truth to the doctors, social workers, police, caseworkers, and legal professionals who needed to hear it. They had treated my insulin like an optional expense and gambled with my life for a concert. I survived—and made sure the truth could never be dismissed as a misunderstanding again.
