The Secret Hidden in the Sterling Will

The next morning, my brother-in-law placed a stack of documents in front of me and said they were “temporary authorizations” needed to protect Leo’s inheritance. I remembered the stranger’s warning and pretended to feel faint. While everyone rushed around me, I slipped away and searched Arthur’s study. Behind a locked drawer, I found a second will—and a letter written in my late husband’s handwriting that changed everything.

The letter revealed that twenty-two years earlier, Arthur’s younger brother had secretly manipulated the family business and stolen shares that should have belonged to my husband. Arthur had discovered the truth but stayed silent to protect the family name. Before my husband died, he uncovered the same secret and began transferring his rightful shares into a trust for Leo. The documents downstairs were designed to make me surrender control of that trust to the very people who had stolen from my husband.

Then Arthur entered the study. He looked at the letter in my hands and closed his eyes. “I was a coward,” he whispered. Before I could respond, the front door opened—and the stranger from the bus walked inside. He was Arthur’s former attorney, the man my husband had contacted years earlier when he first discovered the fraud. He had been watching the family closely and recognized me and Leo at the station, realizing the Sterlings were finally moving against us.
