The House He Thought He Owned

Victor was discharged four days later, weak but smiling as he imagined Rita waiting for him in the house he had promised her. Instead, his taxi stopped in front of blackened walls, shattered windows, and yellow caution tape. His face drained as he stepped onto the sidewalk. “Where’s Sarah?” he whispered. I was already gone—and the insurance investigator had been asking questions he never expected anyone to ask.

The fire had exposed more than Victor’s betrayal. Investigators discovered evidence that the blaze had started in the electrical system—but they also found recent attempts to alter the homeowner’s insurance policy. Victor had increased the coverage weeks earlier and added paperwork that would have transferred certain benefits if I “became unable to manage my affairs.” My attorney had already received copies of everything, including Victor’s messages to Rita discussing the house as if I were already out of the picture.

Then came the final shock. The Brookline house had never been Victor’s to promise because I had quietly transferred it into a protected trust months before his illness worsened. When Victor called me repeatedly, I finally answered once. “You said I was like furniture,” I told him. “So I moved myself somewhere you can’t reach.” Before he could respond, I added, “And Rita should probably know that your real estate deals are now being reviewed too.”

Months later, Victor lost far more than the house he had promised away. Rita disappeared the moment the investigations began, and his carefully built reputation collapsed under questions he could no longer control. As for me, I used part of the insurance settlement to start over near the coast, where no one expected me to sacrifice myself to prove I was loved.
