The Future They Tried to Take From Me

I met Elliot the next morning at a coffee shop halfway between our houses. He had already spoken to his father, and together we uncovered the truth: Dad had exaggerated the company’s “crisis” for months. Victor wasn’t retiring immediately, and there was no business emergency requiring me to give up medical school. Dad simply wanted to keep me nearby and secure an alliance he could control.

Elliot refused to play along. Victor backed him completely and made it clear that his distribution agreement would never depend on our relationship. When Dad discovered Elliot had withdrawn from his plan, he finally admitted what I had suspected all along—he was terrified of losing control of me, the company, and the future he had designed without ever asking what I wanted.
