A coworker kept taking off her shoes at work, and the strong foot odor became unbearable. We shared the same workstation, and I noticed other coworkers were uncomfortable too. I tried ignoring it and even masking the smell with perfume, but nothing helped.
After subtle hints failed, I politely asked her to keep her shoes on. She asked why, so I explained that the odor was making me uncomfortable. Instead of understanding, she became defensive and accused me of harassing her, even threatening to report me to HR.
The next day, she complained to our supervisor, who reprimanded me in front of everyone for being disrespectful. I felt humiliated and decided to let the matter go. A week later, however, an anonymous post appeared on our workplace social media saying, “Ban barefoot behavior in the office, it stinks.”
My coworker immediately assumed I had posted it and confronted me, accusing me of trying to humiliate her. I swore I had nothing to do with it, but she refused to believe me. The post was eventually deleted, yet somehow, everyone still seemed convinced that I was responsible.
