Colin Scott, 23, entered a restricted area of Yellowstone National Park with his sister in 2016, reportedly searching for a thermal pool where they could soak. While approaching a hot spring, he slipped and fell into the extremely hot water. His sister immediately called for help and recorded part of the incident, but rescuers were unable to reach him safely at first because the area was dangerously unstable.
Park officials quickly closed the surrounding area while investigators assessed the site. The conditions made recovery extraordinarily difficult, and the intense heat and acidity of the spring caused severe destruction of the remains that could be recovered. The tragedy demonstrated why Yellowstone’s thermal areas are treated as hazardous environments rather than places for swimming or soaking.
What made the story especially haunting was that Colin had entered an area where visitors were prohibited from leaving the designated trail. Yellowstone’s boardwalks and warning signs exist because the ground around thermal features can be thin, unstable, and dangerously deceptive. A surface that looks solid can collapse without warning.
Colin’s death became a grim reminder that curiosity can have irreversible consequences in Yellowstone’s geothermal landscape. The springs may look beautiful and inviting, but beneath that surface is an environment powerful enough to destroy almost anything that enters it.
