James Ransone (1979–2025) was a versatile character actor from Maryland whose performances brought intensity, vulnerability, and individuality to a wide range of television and film roles.

He became especially well known for playing Ziggy Sobotka in HBO’s The Wire, portraying the complicated and troubled character with a deeply human vulnerability that made him memorable to audiences.

Throughout his career, Ransone appeared in projects including Generation Kill, Inside Man, Sinister, It Chapter Two, The Black Phone and its sequel, as well as productions connected to Spike Lee and Poker Face.

Following his death at the age of 46, tributes highlighted his ability to bring emotional depth and authenticity to imperfect, complicated characters. His work left a lasting impression that extended far beyond the supporting roles he often played.
