A mathematical model published in 1960 by Heinz von Foerster and his colleagues made a dramatic prediction about humanity’s future. Based on population growth trends at the time, the model suggested that unchecked growth could eventually lead to a catastrophic outcome.
The calculation famously pointed to Friday, November 13, 2026 as the date when humanity would supposedly face an apocalyptic crisis caused by overpopulation. As the date approaches, the old prediction has resurfaced online and sparked renewed curiosity.
However, the model was never a reliable countdown to the end of the world. It depended heavily on population-growth trends continuing in ways that did not ultimately match reality, while demographic patterns are influenced by many factors, including fertility rates, mortality, migration, economics, and social change.
So while the 2026 date makes for an intriguing historical prediction, it should not be treated as a genuine forecast of the world’s end. It is better understood as an example of how mathematical models can produce dramatic results when their assumptions are extended far beyond the conditions under which they were created.
