The Centuries-Old Tool Still Trusted by Woodworkers Today

At first glance, an old nail punch may look like a simple piece of metal with no obvious purpose. Also known as a nail set, this small tool has been used by woodworkers and builders for generations to drive nail heads slightly below the surface of wood.

The pointed tip is placed directly on the nail head, and a hammer strikes the opposite end. This pushes the nail beneath the wood without damaging the surrounding surface, allowing the small hole to later be filled with wood putty and sanded smooth.

The technique creates a cleaner, more professional finish on furniture, trim, and other woodworking projects. Modern nail punches are commonly made from hardened steel and come in different sizes, with some featuring spring-loaded mechanisms for greater control.

Despite the arrival of modern power tools, the nail punch remains useful to carpenters, furniture makers, and restoration specialists. It is a small reminder that some of the simplest tools can remain valuable for generations.READ BELOW
