Six years after my manager, Ria, fired me to hire her niece, I had become a senior manager elsewhere when Ria unexpectedly came in for an interview and begged me for a reference, saying, “I have a family to feed.” I helped her get hired, but two weeks later, HR showed me CCTV footage of Ria going through my personal files after hours. They assumed she was stealing confidential information and wanted to fire her immediately, but something felt wrong, so I asked to see the full footage. I froze when I saw that she wasn’t taking anything—she was slipping an envelope into my desk drawer. Inside was a check worth three months of my old salary and a note that read, “This is for your daughter’s college fund. I owe you more than a job. I owe you for the career you should’ve had.” Ria had carried the guilt of what she did for six years, and even while struggling financially, she wanted to make amends after I gave her a second chance. I told HR it was a misunderstanding and returned the money because she needed it more than I did. Sometimes forgiveness isn’t about forgetting the past—it’s about giving someone the chance to make things right, even when you least expect it.
