When my son invited me on a 10-day family trip to Italy, I was excited to make memories with my grandchildren, but I soon learned my daughter-in-law expected me to spend the entire trip babysitting while they explored. When I said I wanted to enjoy Italy too, she told me not to come. Hurt but determined, I booked my own flight and hotel room anyway. When my son later asked me to babysit because it was “expected” of a grandmother, I simply refused. I wasn’t creating drama—I was reminding myself that I’m more than a free babysitter and deserve to enjoy life on my own terms.
