For most people, washing bed sheets about once a week is the recommended routine. Over the course of several nights, sheets collect sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, dust, and allergens that can affect both comfort and hygiene. However, some situations call for more frequent washing. Ifyou sweat heavily, sleep with pets, eat in bed, have allergies or asthma, live with a skin condition like eczema, or are recovering from an illness, washing your sheets every three to four days is a better choice. On the other hand, if you shower before bed, sleep alone, keep pets off the bed, and maintain a clean bedroom, a weekly wash is generally sufficient.
Keeping your bedding clean involves more than just washing the sheets. Pillowcases should be laundered every three to seven days, particularly for people with oily skin or allergies. Blankets typically need washing every two to four weeks, while duvet covers should be cleaned every one to two weeks. Comforters and duvets protected by a cover usually only require washing every two to three months.
