When I met my now-wife, her 3-year-old daughter quickly became like my own, and by age 4, she started calling me “Daddy.” Although her biological father comes in and out of her life, she calls us both Dad. One night, while visiting her biological father, she fell from a skateboard and badly injured her arm, leaving it bruised, swollen, and difficult to move. When I arrived to pick her up, her biological father dismissed her pain as “being dramatic,” but she looked at me and pleaded, “Dad, can we just please go?
