For weeks, I was kept awake by a baby crying outside my apartment, and my exhaustion eventually pushed me to write a cruel note to the mother. But before leaving it at her door, I heard her quietly saying, “I’m trying,” followed by her heartbreaking confession that the baby’s father had left her alone. Realizing how much she was already struggling, I tore up the note and knocked instead. When she opened the door, I offered to hold her baby so she could finally rest. She was overwhelmed with gratitude, and that night changed everything. Since then, I’ve helped whenever I can, reminding myself that sometimes a little kindness can make an enormous difference.
