In February 2002, two men posing as anti-narcotics agents—Michael David Carruth and Jimmy Lee Brooks Jr.—broke into Butch Bowyer’s home in Phenix City, Alabama, using fake documents to subdue Butch and his 12-year-old son, Brett, before demanding money. The attackers forced both victims to a vacant lot, where they slit Butch’s throat, shot young Brett, and buried them together in a shallow, dirt-covered pit. Tragically, Brett did not survive the brutal ordeal, but Butch managed to stay alive beneath the earth, dig his way out with his bare hands after the killers fled, and crawl to a nearby road for help. His harrowing escape allowed him to provide critical testimony and information to investigators, ultimately leading to the arrest and conviction of both perpetrators….
