When my son was four, I made him a cloth lion that became his treasured companion, sleeping beside him for years until I donated it to a charity shop at age 32.\
When he noticed it was gone, he revealed that he had hidden a ring inside it at sixteen, bought with months of lawn-mowing savings for the girl he secretly loved. We recovered the lion, but he explained that she was now happily married, and he no longer wanted to give her the ring—only preserve the memory of a love he never confessed. He placed the ring back inside, asked me to sew the lion shut, and I realized I had nearly given away not just an old toy, but a deeply personal piece of my son’s untold story.
