My sister Amy vanished at 24, and after 16 years, our family had almost given up hope. On her 40th birthday, I stopped at a gas station and saw a woman wearing Amy’s unmistakable denim jacket, so I followed her and learned that Amy had given it to her at a shelter, where she had volunteered every weekend. The woman told me Amy had died from cancer three years earlier, and when I visited the shelter, the director revealed the truth: Amy had escaped a terrible relationship she was too ashamed to tell us about, built a new life, and spent her remaining years helping hundreds of women escape similar situations.
