When I was seven months pregnant, I discovered my husband was having an affair, and the shock left me hospitalized and heartbroken while he packed his things and left for his mistress. Then my mother-in-law came to my hospital room and, despite admitting she had never liked me, told me that what her son had done was disgusting, apologized for not raising him better, and promised to support me because I was carrying her grandchild. She brought me clothes, slippers, a cup, and home-cooked food, picked me up after I gave birth, and welcomed my baby daughter and me into her home when I could no longer afford rent. Since then, she has helped me care for my daughter and supported us through one of the hardest times of our lives.
