After receiving an unexpected complimentary upgrade to business class on a five-hour flight from Denver to Miami, I was approached by a pregnant passenger who demanded my seat because I hadn’t paid for it. I politely declined to give up my upgrade, but as the flight progressed, I noticed her visible discomfort and saw flight attendants tending to her. Upon landing, a crew member subtly reprimanded me by noting that small choices can heavily affect others, leaving me feeling judged by the crew despite having done nothing wrong. Ultimately, while prioritizing a legitimate upgrade isn’t inherently cruel or wrong, situations like this fall into a gray area where personal entitlement clashes with unwritten social expectations of compassion.
