My mother died at 6 a.m. on a Tuesday, and by 9 a.m. my boss was demanding that I come to work, telling me, “Grief is temporary, move on now.” Three weeks later, he called the whole office together and revealed that his wife of 22 years had left him, and as he struggled to speak through his own heartbreak, I walked over and told him, “Take all the time you need.” I stayed with him for two hours after everyone else left, and that experience changed him as a manager.
