The Call That Made Me Fly Across the Country..

My son called me from college one night just to say, “I love you”—something he never did—so I booked a flight without telling him. When his roommate opened the dorm door and saw me, he froze, and inside I found my son surrounded by textbooks, dark circles under his eyes, and quietly falling apart over two failing grades he had hidden from me. When he asked, “What are you doing here?” I simply said, “You called me.” He put his head in his hands, and instead of lecturing him, I ordered food, sat beside him, and listened.
