At just 11 years old, Alex Batty disappeared after travelling to Spain with his mother, Melanie, and grandfather, David, in 2017, beginning a six-year ordeal across Spain, Morocco, and France. In December 2023, at 17, he escaped the alternative community where he had been living and was found walking alone through the French Pyrenees, where a kind stranger helped him contact his grandmother, Susan Caruana, in the UK. Alex later revealed that French authorities had reportedly encountered him before but failed to bring him to safety, raising serious questions about missed opportunities to help him.
