My name is Carrey, and I’m 19. After my mom died, I lived with my stepfather and stepbrother, spending years babysitting him and sacrificing my schoolwork and activities because I believed that was what family meant. When I finally asked my stepfather to pay me for all those hours, he angrily reminded me that he was providing me with a home, making me feel ungrateful for wanting something in return. I decided to move out and build an independent life, but that night, he threatened to destroy my future by withholding the college fund my late mother had saved for me.
