You’re not alone.” When I was discharged, I asked about him, only to learn that no male nurse had been assigned to my room, so I assumed the comforting visits had been hallucinations caused by my medication. Five weeks later, I returned for a checkup and received an envelope from a volunteer containing a note: “I wasn’t part of your care team. I’m a volunteer. Years ago, I survived an accident like yours, and a nurse stayed with me when I couldn’t speak.
