After buying a used desk for $40, I discovered an envelope hidden inside containing $800 in cash and a faded photograph of a little girl. I called the previous owner to return the money, but she insisted I keep it. At the hospital, she revealed that the photograph was of her daughter, who had passed away at just seven years old, and the $800 was money she had spent years saving for her daughter’s headstone before grief and loneliness made her give up. I stayed with her until her sister arrived and promised to help her finally arrange the headstone once she recovered. A simple phone call to return a stranger’s money had unexpectedly become the beginning of a beautiful friendship and a reminder that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can mean everything to someone who feels forgotten.
