At a laundromat, I offered to help a struggling father fold his daughter’s clothes, but he snapped at me until his little girl explained that they needed to hurry so they could visit her mommy. My heart broke when he gently told her that Mommy had passed away eight months earlier and would never come back. Every Saturday, the little girl dressed in her prettiest clothes to visit her mother’s grave and tell her about her week. I helped them that day, and the following Saturday, the girl ran toward me excitedly, shouting, “You came back!” What began as a simple act of kindness slowly became a weekly tradition, and I started joining their cemetery visits, listening to the little girl share her stories with her mother. Months later, her father told me she hadn’t smiled like that since losing her mom. Two years later, I married him, and his daughter became our flower girl, whispering toward the sky on our wedding day, “Mommy, she stayed.”
