On a freezing day outside my office, I gave my jacket to a trembling homeless woman who asked for help, even though I had no money to offer. She handed me a rusty coin and told me to keep it, but my boss witnessed the exchange, became furious, and fired me on the spot. Two weeks later, after struggling to find work, I discovered a mysterious velvet box outside my apartment. Remembering the coin, I slid it into the box, unlocking a note and an envelope containing an incredible job offer. The woman was actually a wealthy CEO who had been testing people’s kindness and character. I had lost my job for helping her, but that same act of compassion had earned me an extraordinary opportunity. When I met her again in the boardroom, she smiled and said, “You kept the coin.” In that moment, I realized that one small act of kindness had changed my entire life.
