That uneasy, stomach-turning feeling is something we all try to avoid, but there are moments when it becomes impossible to escape. I discovered one of those moments at work when I opened a drawer and found dozens of packets of expired mayonnaise hidden in the back. The heat had caused them to spill, creating a nauseating mess that immediately made my stomach turn.
Some of the packets were open and emptied. It appeared she had used them to make a creamy sauce, which likely contaminated food for others. The drawer also contained other deeply disturbing items, like fingernails and stained napkins. It was shocking because she had only joined the company a couple of weeks prior and didn’t seem unhygienic at first glance.
I’m not usually one to report coworkers, but this crossed a line. I had no choice but to report it to HR. After a brief investigation, she was let go just a week later. The relief was immediate, but the memory of what I had found lingered far longer.
Even beyond that incident, I encountered more unsettling situations. I once told the custodial staff, “Hey, some lady just changed her baby on that table,” and they didn’t react. These moments stick with you — a reminder of how quickly ordinary spaces can become deeply disturbing when hygiene and care are ignored.
