I FLEW TO ALASKA AND FOUND MY DYING DAUGHTER ABANDONED IN HOSPICE WHILE HER HUSBAND ENJOYED A BAHAMAS HONEYMOON

The call came while I was volunteering at a small community clinic in Chicago, quietly stacking medical supplies and trying to enjoy retirement after forty years as an emergency room nurse. The number had an Alaska area code, and something about it made my chest tighten before I even answered. A young hospice nurse named Nora spoke carefully on the other end. “Your daughter, Lily, asked me to call you,” she said softly. “She’s in end-of-life care, and her condition is getting worse.” The box of gauze slipped from my hands and scattered across the floor. My daughter had been dying in Alaska for three weeks, and I was only hearing about it now.

I demanded to know where her husband Colin was. Nora hesitated before telling me he had admitted Lily to hospice himself, signed the paperwork, then disappeared. She quietly added that he listed himself as unavailable due to “international travel.” I packed my suitcase in less than fifteen minutes and rushed to the airport, trying to make sense of how Lily could have hidden something this serious from me. But while waiting for my flight, an email from Nora changed everything. Attached was Lily’s intake form—and beneath it, a message saying Colin was not on a business trip at all. His public social media showed him honeymooning in the Bahamas with another woman while my daughter lay alone in hospice.

The flight to Anchorage felt endless. I replayed every moment from the last year in my head—every phone call Lily rushed through, every holiday Colin skipped, every time she insisted she was “just tired.” Deep down, I realized I had seen pieces of the truth long ago. Colin always made Lily smaller somehow. Quieter. Careful with every word. When I finally arrived at Northern Light Hospice close to midnight, the frozen Alaskan air felt sharp enough to split me open. Nora led me silently through dim hallways until she stopped outside Room 112.

The second I stepped inside, I forgot how to breathe. My daughter barely looked like herself beneath the blankets and oxygen tubes. Her face was pale and fragile, her body painfully thin. When I took her hand, her eyes slowly opened. “Mom,” she whispered weakly. I broke down instantly. But moments later, outside the room, Nora handed me a folder and quietly revealed the horrifying truth about Colin. By the time she finished speaking, I realized my daughter’s husband hadn’t just abandoned her while she was dying… he had been planning to profit from it. READ FINAL PART–
