My name is Emily Carter, and dating Ryan Whitmore meant constantly feeling judged by his wealthy family. The Whitmores owned luxury properties, country clubs, and enough money to influence half the county, while I was just a public school teacher trying to make ends meet. When they invited me to their annual family BBQ, I knew it was another test. I spent the afternoon preparing carefully, wearing a simple blue dress Ryan loved and bringing a homemade peach cobbler, determined to give them no reason to criticize me.
About ten minutes from the Whitmore estate, I spotted an elderly woman standing alone beside a ditch in the pouring rain while car after car ignored her. She looked frightened, soaked, and completely lost. I immediately pulled over and helped her into my car. She explained that her driver had left her at the wrong turn and she couldn’t remember exactly where she lived, only that there were iron gates and a long stone driveway nearby. As the storm worsened, I drove through muddy roads trying to help her remember where she belonged.
Twice my tires became stuck in the mud while turning around, and I ruined my dress pushing the car free. Finally, the woman pointed weakly toward a massive set of iron gates ahead. My stomach dropped instantly when I recognized them. They belonged to the Whitmore estate. The guards opened the gates the second they saw her, and we drove through the enormous property while she quietly thanked me for helping her when nobody else would.
By the time I rushed to the backyard BBQ, every guest turned to stare. My hair was soaked, mud covered my dress, and my shoes were destroyed. Ryan looked concerned, but before he could say anything, his father Charles Whitmore laughed loudly while raising his drink. “Ryan,” he mocked in front of everyone, “your fiancée really does look like trash.” Guests chuckled as humiliation burned across my face… until the patio doors slowly opened behind him, and the elderly woman I had rescued stepped outside beside the house manager. The second Charles saw her, all the color drained from his face..
