THE NIGHT WE STOPPED PRETENDING

The kitchen was so quiet it felt heavy, like the air itself was pressing down on us. I cleaned the cut above Ryan’s eyebrow while he sat stiffly at the counter, trying to act fine despite the bruises on his arm. Earlier, during a fight, he had told me I wasn’t his real mom—and those words still echoed between us.

Hours later, he came home hurt, and I didn’t know whether to panic or stay calm for his sake. I tended to his injuries in silence until his phone lit up with messages from his friends mocking me, calling me “fake” and laughing at how much I cared. He snatched it away, but it was already too late.

What hurt more wasn’t the messages—it was that he had laughed at them too. When I finally spoke, my voice broke as I told him I knew I wasn’t his real mother, but I had loved him like he was my own anyway. Then the truth came out: he had been getting mocked at school for caring about me, and the bruises were from defending me.

Everything shifted in that moment. The anger didn’t disappear, but something deeper surfaced underneath it—fear, loyalty, and confusion. He admitted I was easier to hurt because I stayed, and I told him I wasn’t going anywhere. He leaned into me for just a second, and that small moment said more than any label ever could.
