My Parents Tried to Force Me to Give Up Nursing School..

Ashley worked three jobs throughout high school, earned a scholarship, and saved every dollar to achieve her dream of attending nursing school. Just as her future was finally coming together, her sister became seriously ill. Although Ashley wanted to help, her parents insisted she put her education on hold and become her sister’s full-time caregiver, arguing that they couldn’t leave their own jobs because she was “young” and school could wait.

When Ashley refused, reminding them that her scholarship wouldn’t wait, her parents retaliated. They canceled her phone plan, withdrew as guarantors for her housing, and took away access to the car she depended on for work and school. Ashley realized the issue was no longer about helping her sister—it had become an attempt to force her into giving up her independence and education.

Now facing the possibility of losing housing, transportation, and her ability to stay in school, Ashley struggles with guilt and wonders whether she’s being selfish for wanting to continue pursuing the future she worked so hard to build. At the same time, she feels her parents crossed a serious line by trying to control her through financial pressure.

The advice she received emphasized that caring for her sister and protecting her own future are not mutually exclusive. She was encouraged to seek immediate help from her college’s financial aid office, student services, and counseling resources, which may offer emergency assistance with housing, transportation, or finances. Supporting family should never require sacrificing a lifelong dream, and preserving her education is both reasonable and important.
