I married a widower with a teenage daughter who treated me like a stranger, never spoke to me, and left every room I entered. One night at 2 AM, I found her in the kitchen trying to make her late mother’s signature cake, but she couldn’t bring herself to start. Instead of approaching her, I sat nearby and pretended to struggle with a baking recipe. After a while, she quietly said, “It’s the eggs. My mom always said they have to be warm.” We spent the next three hours baking together in silence, standing on opposite sides of the kitchen. When the cake was finally ready, she took one bite, burst into tears, and pushed the plate toward me. Then she whispered, “Thank you. You didn’t try to take her place.” In that moment, I realized I didn’t have to replace her mother to become someone she could love.
