I’m a single mom raising my 9-year-old son, and our apartment walls are so thin that my neighbor can hear almost everything. My son sometimes stays home alone for about an hour while I’m at work, and it had never been a problem until one day I came home early and couldn’t find him anywhere. I panicked until I noticed a note on the table explaining that he had started feeling sick and got scared, so he knocked on our neighbor’s door. She welcomed him inside, tried calling me, and stayed with him until I arrived. When I rushed over, they were sitting on the couch playing a game, with my son wrapped in a blanket and drinking water. He was safe, comfortable, and no longer scared. That day, my embarrassment about our thin walls disappeared, and I realized I didn’t have to do everything alone. Now my neighbor sometimes helps with my son, and I’m more grateful than ever to have someone kind nearby who reminds me that even when life feels lonely, we’re not always as alone as we think.
